I’ll let you in on a secret. An awkward one. Here it goes: I don’t wash every day. I’d love to, but with a toddler and a baby I don’t always manage. And now that the sun has decided to show us how beautiful British spring can be things are taking a bad turn for me. It’s hot and we all know what that means. So you can imagine how happy I was when we were sent an organic natural deodorant to test. And it’s made in UK!
I love working with brands, which were started at a kitchen table and this is the case with The Green Woman. It was started by two sisters in Surrey, because they felt a need to make a positive change. Their motto is:
Change the business, not the climate.
Natural deodorant – Fit Pit Woman and Fit Pit Sensitive
When the parcel arrived I was pleased to see that the box used to package the deodorant was re-used from another product – it saves lots of energy and resources not to produce a new box. The padding inside, keeping the jars from breaking, was made of shredded paper – another great idea (no cost to business, no cost to the environment).
First I tried Fit Pit Woman, which has a delicate rosemary smell. It’s a cream, so to apply it I had to take a small amount (pea sized) and spread it on the armpit with my fingers. It has a smooth slightly powdery texture. It spread easily without leaving any visible residue. It’s not oily or sticky, and it absorbed instantly, so there is no danger of marking the clothes. As a mum with two young kids I don’t have time to stand around and wait for creams to absorb!
I have been using the deodorant for about a couple of weeks, and we’ve had some pretty hot days. It passed with flying colours, unlike other organic deodorants I have tried. I have tired one before, which seemed to make the smell worse… I do believe that Fit Pit may save my friendships on hot summer days.
So, how does it work? The list of ingredients is reassuringly short and they all sound familiar. It’s nice to know what I am putting onto my skin. The main ingredient is bicarbonate of soda. I knew it’s great for cleaning and whitening teeth, but I didn’t know it has other uses. According to the Green Woman website it works through altering the skins Ph, which means the odour causing bacteria can’t thrive. Very clever.
There are also other organic ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter, to moisturise the skin. And aloe vera to smooth it out. There’s also organic sunflower oil and essential oils, the latter to give it the subtle aroma.
Fit Pit sensitive, seems exactly the same minus the rosemary smell. The list of ingredients is slightly shorter, as the essential oils are not used. I guess if you have sensitive skin, the less ingredients the better.
I was not sure what to expect from a natural deodorant, especially that my last trial was very disappointing, but Fit Pit is great. In fact the only thing I don’t like about it is the name…
Because all the ingredients are so natural these deodorants are suitable for anyone, even when you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
This brand got everything right. The product is organic and natural, with no chemicals or nasties. The packaging is recycled (the smaller jars are little jam jars used in hotels…), reusable and recyclable. There is no plastic used in packaging. Boxes for posting the products are also recycled. If I remember correctly mine was from chutney from a big supermarket. Inside the box old shredded documents were keeping jars from breaking.
Natural deodorant is made in UK by Eve and Suzanne, so the products are made locally with minimal impact to the environment. All the ingredients are organic.
On top of all the good sustainability work company donates 10% of their profits to selected charities.
The only thing, which creates concern (and air miles) is shea butter from Africa and coconut oil (obviously not grown in Europe).
I am very happy that I can offer one of my lucky readers a whole summer’s worth of Fit Pit! Let’s hope it will be a sunny one 🙂
